Adomaitis Elected Fellow

Clark School Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) professor Ray Adomaitis (joint, Institute for System Research [ISR]) has been elected to Fellowship in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Founded in 1908, the AIChE is the leading professional society for chemical engineers in the United States and around the world, with over 40,000 members from 90 countries. The organization formed when the discipline was still emerging from traditional chemistry, providing publishing, education and networking opportunities as the profession took shape.

Adomaitis' research group, based in the Laboratory for Advanced Materials Processing, focuses on simulation-based design, optimization, and experimental evaluation of advanced materials manufacturing processes. The group specializes in the development and testing of next-generation thin film chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic-layer deposition (ALD) systems, and is particularly interested in new reactor designs for thin-film deposition of semiconductor materials for electronic and solar energy applications. Adomaitis' current projects in microelectronic and solar cell manufacturing include Si CVD, epitaxial growth of III-V compounds, and ALD of metal oxide films. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation, the University of Maryland Energy Research Center, and by industrial partners.

Adomaitis earned his Ph.D. from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1988. He joined the University of Maryland as a research scientist with ISR in 1990. In 1995 he received a joint appointment to the faculties of the (then) Department of Chemical Engineering and ISR, and later served as Acting Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In addition to his research program, Adomaitis teaches undergraduate courses on computer methods in chemical engineering and thermodynamics.
