ECE Visiting Research Scientist Igor Smolyaninov has been named a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA).

Smolyaninov was recognized for outstanding research contributions in the areas of plasmonics, optical metamaterials, and transformation optics, and for his distinguished record of service to the optics community.

Smolyaninov, who has worked with Prof. Christopher Davis's Maryland Optics Group, has been engaged in innovative research in recent years involving a nanoscale superlens microscope, invisibility cloak technology, and a new method for modeling the big bang.

The mission of the Optical Society of America (OSA) is to promote the generation, application and archiving of knowledge in optics and photonics and to disseminate this knowledge worldwide. With a membership of more than 14,000 optics and photonics scientists, engineers, educators, technicians and business leaders from over 81 countries, the Optical Society of America is the prime Optical Society in the world.
