John Baras elected AAAS Fellow

Professor John Baras (ECE/ISR) has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in its Section on Engineering. Baras’s citation mentions accomplishments in the multiple fields that mark his career. It reads, "for distinguished contributions to the fields of systems and control, communication networks, network security, and leadership in establishing outstanding cross-disciplinary research and education programs." The Fellow certificate will be presented at the AAAS annual meeting in Chicago in February.

Baras is the fifth ISR faculty member to receive the award, joining ISR-affiliated Professors Cynthia Moss (Johns Hopkins University) and Ben Shneiderman (CS/UMIACS), former ISR-affiliated Professor V.S. Subrahmanian (CS/UMIACS), and Research Professor Emeritus Avis Cohen (Biology/ISR).

The AAAS is the world's largest general scientific society, founded in 1848, and includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science serving 10 million individuals. The tradition of AAAS fellows, who are chosen by their peers, began in 1874. The non-profit AAAS is open to all and fulfills its mission to "advance science and serve society" through initiatives in science policy; international programs; science education; and more.
