International Association for Hydrogen Energy Honors Wachsman for Fuel Cell Research

University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC) director Professor Eric Wachsman's “superior service and exemplary research” have earned him the International Association for Hydrogen Energy's (IAHE) Sir William Grove Award. The award, given for leadership in the field of electrochemical research for hydrogen processing, is named for Sir William Grove, the inventor of the fuel cell. Wachsman was selected for his efforts to develop, improve and commercialize solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology.

Wachsman, who is jointly appointed to the Clark School’s Departments of Materials Science & Engineering and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, is an internationally recognized champion for the use of SOFCs for stationary and automotive power generation. His work has been covered extensivly in academic and mainsteam publications, including the Washington Post, Forbes, Scientific American, MSNBC, Science, MIT Technology Review, and Energy and Environmental Science. Most recently he and colleague Bryan Blackburn have gained national media attention for their startup company, Redox Power Systems LLC, which is developing a fuel-flexible 25 kilowatt power generation system.

The IAHE will present Wachsman with the award at the 20th World Hydrogen Energy Conference, to be held 15-20 June 2014 in Gwangju City, South Korea.
