UMD Holds Risk and Reliability Engineering 25th Anniversary SymposiumThe University of Maryland Center for Risk and Reliability Engineering (CRR) will host a 25th Year Anniversary Symposium and Alumni Reception on April 2, 2014, at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center on the College Park campus. The University of Maryland was the first university to offer a degree granting program for Reliability Engineering in the United States, and the program is the largest and most comprehensive graduate program in the field of reliability and risk analysis of engineered systems and processes. With modern systems becoming increasingly complex, the importance of reliability engineering is growing more critical in today's manufacturing, energy and infrastructure environments. The symposium, titled Promise of a Discipline: Reliability and Risk in Theory and Practice, will celebrate CRR’s 25 years of research and education excellence in reliability engineering and risk analysis by bringing together experts and leaders in the field to offer insights on the promising directions that could revolutionize the field of Reliability Engineering, discuss risk –informed regulation, oversight, and responding to emergencies, and explore challenges in educating the next generation of reliability engineers in an interdisciplinary environment. “The event in not only a celebration of the achievements of CRR and the Reliability Engineering Program at University of Maryland, but also an occasion to acknowledge the sustained efforts by many others over the past two decades to establish reliability engineering as an academic discipline worldwide,” said Dr. Mosleh, Kim Chair Professor and Director of CRR. Dr. Jeong Kim, entrepreneur and former president of Bell Labs, will be a feature keynote speaker. Kim was also the recipient of the first Ph.D. awarded by UMD in Reliability Engineering. Ken Farquhar, President of General Business at ManTech International, and UMD Reliability Engineering graduate, will also be a feature keynote speaker. Featured panelists include:
