2013 Dinah Berman Memorial Award Given to NanoCenter Member

On April 9, Chris Berkey, a student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was presented the Dinah Berman Memorial Award. The award is given to a third year engineering student with a 4.0 grade point average and who has combined academic excellence with demonstrated leadership or service to the Clark School.

Junior Chris Berkey is a member of the university Honors Program and has maintained a 4.0 GPA while also remaining active in Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. Outside of the classroom, Berkey volunteers in the MindSET program, where he works with other Clark School students to teach engineering concepts to kids at local middle schools and encourage them to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. He is currently researching the possible role of unique nanostructures in new high energy density batteries.

“This is a very nice recognition of Chris Berkey's excellent work,” said his advisor, Gary Rubloff, director of the Maryland NanoCenter and a professor in MSE. “I am really glad to have him in my group.”

Berkey and other MSE undergraduates were among the award recipients at the 2012-2013 A. James Clark School of Engineering's Honors and Awards Ceremony. The event honors students from all departments who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance, research, and contributions to their departments or fields. Clark School dean Darryll Pines and MSE professor and chair Robert M. Briber presented the awards.
