$10M Collaboration with Naval Surface Warfare Center

The Center for Energetic Concepts Development (CECD), under the leadership of Prof. Dave Anand (mechanical engineering), has signed a new $10 million, five-year collaborative agreement with the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Indian Head, Md., in the area of energetics.

This is the third agreement between the two organizations. The first was signed in 1998, and the second in 2004.

The winning proposal was submitted to NSWC Indian Head in response to Solicitation BAA-08-001 and was evaluated based on four criteria: (1) the overall technical merits of the proposed research and development; (2) the potential relationship of the proposed research and development to Department of Navy missions; (3) CECD capabilities, related experience, and facilities; and (4) quality and amount of cost share proposed by CECD.

The collaboration will continue various technical activities between NSWC Indian Head and CECD. During the last ten years, CECD received $8.9 million in research support from NSWC Indian Head, covering 130 technical projects. Fifty-two scientists and engineers from NSWC and 31 faculty and researchers from UM have worked on these projects.
