ECE Professor Rama Chellappa (ECE/CS/UMIACS) was awarded the A. James Clark School of Engineering Outstanding Faculty Research Award at a faculty and staff reception in the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building rotunda on October 11, 2007.

The award was given to Dr. Chellappa in recognition of his innovative research in pattern recognition and signal processing, which has included advances in human gait and face recognition and the development of intelligent surveillance applications.

The Clark School Outstanding Faculty Research Award was instituted to recognize exceptionally influential research accomplishments by faculty in the Clark School. The award consists of a plaque, a cash award in the amount of $2,000, and a research augmentation award worth $5,000 per year for three years.

Dr. Chellappa was also recently selected as an IEEE Signal Processing Society's (SPS) 2008 Distinguished Lecturer. The SPS Distinguished Lecturer Program provides means for SPS chapters across the country to invite individuals who are well known educators and authors in the fields of signal processing to speak at Chapter meetings.
