With AI’s Help, Doctors Could One Day Press ‘Print’ in the Operating Room

 

University of Maryland bioengineers are working toward a future when waiting for an organ or tissue donor isn’t necessary—replacements for damaged or diseased body parts will be 3D-printed on devices that use “inks” infused with living cells.

Getting those mixtures and printing procedures tuned just right to create durable bio-printed parts is an arduous process, however. Led by Distinguished University Professor and Fischell Department of Bioengineering Chair John Fisher, UMD faculty and students at the A. James Clark School of Engineering are turning to the speed and power of AI to help bring this technology closer to fruition.
