Welcome to Our Academic Year!

Welcome to a new academic year at Maryland Engineering. Our school is home for people with a passion to lead technological advancements that impact society, and the innovation and ingenuity to do it.

It is an important time in history to be an engineer. Some of the world’s most exciting technologies are advancing at an unprecedented pace in their development and require engineers to help them mature. This includes the ethical and impactful use of artificial intelligence; expansion of quantum computing and networking systems; creation of smart manufacturing systems that strengthen our nation’s economy; integration of AI and advanced technologies into health care solutions that are accessible, affordable, and personalized to the patient; and more. In addition, the public has raised questions about the value of science and higher education, and the role we play in helping the nation and our local communities. We must think globally but have impact locally.

Engineers possess the unique skills to overcome these challenges. They can define the necessary technical solution, work in teams to create it, and explain - in easily understandable ways - its impact on people in their daily lives. For example:

We also will continue our leading research in quantum computing, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and materials, autonomous systems, energy storage and generation, space technologies, and more.

Our world-class students, faculty, and staff make all of this possible. As in the past, I look forward to joining you in honoring our students, faculty, and staff, and building a stronger community.

We truly appreciate your support. We are Terrapin Strong, and value your partnership as we work to strengthen our Maryland Engineering ecosystem so everyone can thrive.

We are going to have a great year! Go Terps!

Sincerely,

Samuel Graham
