These top global rankings are largely due to the fact that many UMD professors typically rank in the top 1% of those most highly cited. For example, Distinguished University Professor and Director of MEI2, Dr. Eric Wachsman, ranks in the top 0.09% in the field of energy with about 320,000 scientists, as noted by the Elsevier data repository of author databases. Several other UMD faculty are similarly ranked highly in these areas, including Dr. Chunsheng Wang, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and Dr. Michael Pecht, mechanical engineering, who are among the list of most highly cited researchers in 2024, as ranked by Clarivate. MEI2’s mission is to catalyze clean energy technology to stimulate economic growth and create a sustainable future. The Institute focuses on translating university energy research into new clean energy companies in the State of Maryland simultaneously benefiting the environment and creating high paying jobs to help the State economy. These rankings on citations and impact are strong indicators of the contributions UMD is making to achieve a sustainable future on a global scale and more locally to advance the Maryland and U.S. energy innovation economy.
