Laurence Named AIAA Associate Fellow

Department of Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Stuart Laurence has been elected to the grade of Associate Fellow-Class of 2022 in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). AIAA Associate Fellows are selected based on the distinction of their notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.

Laurence joined the University of Maryland faculty in 2013 and currently heads up the High-Speed Aerodynamics and Propulsion Laboratory (HAPL) which specializes in investigations of a wide variety of high-speed flow problems, including hypersonic boundary-layer transition, aerodynamic interactions between free-flying bodies, shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions, fluid-structure interactions, scramjet unstart, and diagnostic development.

Earlier this year he received a Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) grant from the Office of Naval Research to support work in “Interactions of Supersonic Projectiles with Large Droplets and Aerosol-laden Flows,” and most recently, recieved a $500,000 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award (YFA) to support new approaches in hypersonic wind tunnel research.

Laurence completed his undergraduate education at the University of Auckland, receiving a B.A./B.Sc. (Hons) in Philosophy, Physics and Applied Mathematics in 2001 before coming to the U.S. to pursue his graduate studies at the Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories, California Institute of Technology (GALCIT), Pasadena. He received his M.S. in 2002 and his Ph.D. in 2006. Following a short post-doctoral stint at GALCIT, Laurence spent a year in China studying Mandarin, before moving to Goettingen, Germany in 2009 to work as a research scientist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for almost five years.

AIAA will formally honor and induct the 2022 class at its AIAA Associate Fellows Induction Ceremony and dinner on January 3, 2022 during its 2022 AIAA SciTech Forum, 3-7 January in San Diego, Calif.
