Hahn Named ASME Fellow

Department of Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor Jin-Oh Hahn has been named an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow. ASME Fellows must be nominated by fellow members and ten or more years of active practice in the field.

Hahn was nominated for his “significant contributions to the engineering community in terms of scholarship, education, and leadership and service.”

As head of the Laboratory for Control and Information Systems, Hahn is advancing technologies in health monitoring and maintenance methodologies applicable to a wide range of dynamic systems by exploiting control and systems theory, with priority emphasis on bio-systems, health and medicine.

The lab’s four main areas of focus include: wearable physiological signals analytics, blood pressure (BP) monitoring, closed-loop autonomous medical care, and cardiovascular (CV) risk estimation and disease diagnosis. 

According to his nominating fellows, through this research, Hahn has made “seminal contributions to wearable physiological signal analytics, advanced blood pressure monitoring, cardiovascular health and disease monitoring, and autonomous medical care, which have been well recognized through numerous awards, patents, technology transfers, and more than 90 journal publications with extensive citations.”

Among these numerous awards are a U.S. National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award (2018) and a U.S. Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program Award (2014), as well as several best paper awards including two ASME Best Bio-Systems and Healthcare Paper Awards (2020, 2017) and an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Most Impactful Paper Award (2019).

As a faculty mentor, Hahn has advised more than 25 graduate students and post-docs, as well as numerous undergraduate students, and he has performed various leadership and service roles to the engineering community.
