Cumings to Participate in Exchange Program

Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Assistant Professor John Cumings has been invited to participate in the Young Researchers Exchange Program in New Instrumentation for Nanoscale Structures. The program is jointly sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Technology (MEXT). Its goal is to develop and strengthen connections between young American and Japanese researchers, primarily at the assistant professor level, working in nanotechnology.

Each country will send 12—15 participants on a 1 1/2—2 week trip to visit leading nanotechnology labs in each others' countries. This will be the fourth such exchange and will focus primarily on three-dimensional measurements and visualization at the nanoscale.

This year, the program will begin with a one-day symposium at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on March 7, 2007. The symposium will serve to introduce the U.S. and Japanese participants to one another and provide an opportunity for each to present an overview of his or her current research activities. After the symposium, the Japanese delegation will stay on in the U.S. to begin their tour of selected nanotechnology laboratories.
