Department of Aerospace Engineering graduate student Joseph Schmaus has been selected to receive the 2013-2014 Sikorsky Aircraft Fellowship. The fellowship awards the recipient $10,000 to support educational expenses.

Joseph Schmaus is pursuing his Ph.D. in rotorcraft at the University of Maryland, where his research interests include high-speed coaxial helicopters and the Gamera human powered helicopter. He received his B.S. with honors in Aerospace Engineering and Mathematics from the University of Maryland in 2006, working on research projects in flapping wing flight for micro air vehicles.

Before returning to Maryland in 2010, Schmaus developed lighting controls for home automation at Lutron Electronics. He is active in the American Helicopter Society (AHS), Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE), and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).

The Sikorsky Fellowship, established in 2011, is awarded to an outstanding Ph.D. candidate in mechanical, electrical, computer, or aerospace engineering. Sikorsky selects finalists from a pool of nominated students and the winner is then chosen by the Clark School Graduate Advisory Council.
