Clark School Eastern Capital of Combustion Research

Combining the joint efforts of its several combustion research groups spread across the departments of aerospace, mechanical and fire protection engineering, the Clark School is hosting the Fall 2009 meeting of the Eastern States Section of the Combustion Institute (ESSCI) October 18-21 in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union Building.

The Combustion Institute is the premier scientific society in Combustion Science and the Fall Meeting of the ESSCI is a prestigious regular event that is drawing together approximately 150 combustion researchers from academia, government laboratories, private corporations and government funding agencies.

Combustion of fossil fuels currently provides 85 percent of the U.S. energy needs and it is anticipated that combustion will continue to be the predominant source of energy for the near and middle terms. Continued interest in technological innovation for combustion systems is driven both by regulatory demands requiring more fuel efficient and cleaner combustion processes and by the progressive emergence of alternative fuels as replacements of crude oil. The technical challenges found in the design of fuel-flexible, fuel-efficient and non-polluting systems have led in turn to a renewed focus on combustion research.

This event provides a unique opportunity to promote Clark School students and faculty through the presentation of the combustion research activities that are taking place at the school. The program includes participation and presentations from nine faculty members and more than 20 graduate students from the Clark School.
