ECE Assistant Professor Edo Waks is the recipient of a 2009 National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award for "Coherent Interactions Between Photons and Quantum Dots Using Photonic Crystals." The five-year grant is worth $400,000.

His research will use photonic crystal structures to modify and enhance quantum dots (QD) properties, allowing coherent interactions between a QD and a photon field. Such interactions are essential elements of photonic quantum information processing. The research will help develop new fundamental concepts in the control of semiconductor nanostructures at the quantum level, as well as coherent light-matter interactions.

For more information about the research award, visit the NSF website.

Dr. Waks received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Fellow. His research interests include studying the application of photonic crystals to quantum information processing, as well as the use of photonic crystals for practical tools in optical telecommunication and sensing.

The NSF CAREER program fosters the career development of outstanding junior faculty, combining the support of research and education of the highest quality and in the broadest sense. For more information, visit: http://www.nsf.gov/career_opps/.
