Alumnus Mark Paulus Receives 2021 Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers of the Year Award


Department of Mechanical Engineering alumnus Mark Paulus (Ph.D. ’11) received the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development, and Acquisition) 2021 Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers of the Year Award in the Individual Engineer category.

The Etter Awards are given annually to the Department of the Navy’s most exceptional civilian and military scientists and engineers in recognition of technically outstanding and highly beneficial contributions.

According to the Navy’s press release, Paulus was recognized for developing a low-cost, portable, undersea tracking capability that is deployable from surface vessels with the ability to return to launch point.

Paulus is currently principal for research at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Division Keyport in Washington state where he is responsible for the oversight of their Test and Evaluation Department’s research portfolio, as well as the development of novel sensing technology.

He completed his Ph.D. at Maryland under the advisement of Professor Abhijit Dasgupta with a focus on experimentation and modeling to address vibration durability of structures subjected to different random vibrations.

This year’s award recipients were recognized on June 25 during the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Research, Development and Acquisition Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers Awards Ceremony.
