University of Maryland students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering's Terps Racing teams were invited to showcase their Baja and SAE Formula vehicles at the 2013 Grand Prix of Baltimore this past Labor Day weekend in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The event attracted more than 130,000 attendees.

As part of the event's Celebration of Acceleration, the UMD team was featured in the Family Fun Zone, where attendees had the chance to view Terps Racings’ Baja and SAE Formula racing cars up close and get the opportunity to talk with the students who helped design them. Some visitors, like T. J. Jarek (pictured left), even got a chance to sit in the driver’s seat to get the feeling of a student-built vehicle made for accelerated driving.

According to Emily Posey, the Terps Racing publicity chair, the team's attendance at this event really helped spread awareness about the program and created an opportunity to get people with a passion for cars and racing interested in what it took to build a race car. Many parents asked how they could get their children involved early in engineering so that they could form their own racing clubs when they get older.

Terps Racing students who participated in the event were:

Bunty Bhatia
Carl Gunter
Sahil Kulgod
Andrew Manny
Sam Myers

Mark Nathanson
Emily Posey
Evan Reeves
T.J. Root
Alek Williams

This was the first year the team was invited to participate in the Baltimore Grand Prix.
