Doctorate student Christopher Hendricks has been awarded a $15,000 ARCS Scholarship by the ARCS Foundation, which awards U.S. citizens pursuing degrees in science, engineering and medical research.

Hendricks’s research in lithium-ion battery technology aligns with the ARCS Foundation’s interest in the energy research field. His studies focus on battery health and safety management through the use of sensing technologies for advanced failure mitigation. “As renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles become more prevalent, managing the lifetime and safety of energy systems becomes increasingly important,” Hendricks said.

As an ARCS scholar, Hendricks will receive support from ARCS members who take an interest in each scholar’s life in addition to their research goals. “I appreciate this aspect of the scholarship because the members want the scholars to succeed in everything they do,” Hendricks said. Meeting fellow ARCS scholars will also increase Hendricks’s knowledge of research in various related fields.

Hendricks works as a graduate assistant in the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE), which has helped provide support for his research. Graduate students and professors with CALCE’s battery group have provided invaluable assistance with his research.
