Scholl to Graduates: "Think Big"

The Clark School's fall commencement ceremonies took place on December 20 in the Cole Student Activities Building. Technology entrepreneur and Clark School Board of Visitors Director Tom Scholl served as commencement speaker and electrical engineering major Harneet Singh Khurana served as student speaker. Scholl encouraged the graduates to find mentors, to learn about finances and to think big. The text of his speech is available online. Also at the ceremony, winners of the Clark School's E. Robert Kent Outstanding Teaching Award for Junior Faculty and Outstanding Staff Service Award were announced. Assistant Professor Tom Murphy, electrical and computer engineering, was presented was presented with the junior faculty award. He was honored for his passion for education, versatility as an instructor and the supportive environment he creates in the classroom. George Syrmos, executive director of the Clark School's Office of Advanced Engineering Education, received the staff service award for his enthusiastic leadership of the program and the support he provides elsewhere throughout the Clark School to students, faculty, staff and alumni. Syrmos is also an alumnus of the Clark School. The aerospace engineering graduates celebrated their accomplishments by throwing paper airplanes at the conclusion of the ceremony.
